Since 2008, the MCU has been a boys’ game with Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor all taking centre stage. It’s the ladies’ turn to be front-page news. Since San Diego Comic-Con and D23, news has risen that more of its female characters will become central focus points in their upcoming projects. Girl power for the win!
Scarlet Witch and Vision
The six-parter will see Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany return as Wanda Maximoff and Vision. Monica Rambeau (Lieutenant Trouble) will appear all grown up and will be played by Teyonah Parris.
D23 revealed that Kat Dennings from Thor’s first two adventures will reprise her role as Darcy Lewis. Randall Park returns as Jimmy Woo from Ant-Man and the Wasp and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Kathryn Hahn also joined the cast but her character is under wraps.
The serial is a prequel/spin-off to the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness film with Scarlet Witch appearing.
It’s unknown what the premise will be or where the show will sit in the timeline. The show drops on Disney + in 2021.
Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor
Natalie Portman’s relationship with Marvel Studios is frosty. During production on the debut Asgardian flick known simply as Thor, she was told her role wouldn’t be purely the love interest. She wasn’t allowed to quit Thor: The Dark World because she was bound by contract to complete at least two movies.
Fans got the biggest surprise when it was announced Taika Waititi would direct his second film; Thor: Love and Thunder. In this film, Portman will return as Jane Foster and take up the mantle of Mighty Thor.
Tessa Thompson and Waititi will also return as Valkyrie and the lovable Korg. The movie will arrive during 2021 as the final movie of Phase Four.
The Eternals
The 2020 film slate involves plenty of female empowerment. Angelina Jolie as Thena while Gemma Chan will play Sersei. Meanwhile, Salma Hayek portrays a gender-flipped version of Ajak. Chloé Zhao serves as the film’s director. This makes her the first woman to direct a Marvel movie solo.
The Eternals features deaf actress Lauren Ridloff as the mute Makkari who is the first deaf character in the MCU. Game of Thrones star, Richard Madden will play Ikaris. The flick reunites GoT alumnis Madden (Rob Stark) and Kit Harington (Jon Snow) who portrays Black Knight.
Nat’s Final Adventure?
For years fans have wanted the sole OG female Avenger, Natasha “Black Widow” Romanoff to have her own movie. Guess what? She’s finally getting one and we couldn’t be more excited!
Scarlett Johansson will reprise her beloved role as Nat while she’ll be joined by Rachel Weisz as Melina and David Harbour as Red Guardian, the Russian counterpart of Captain America. Florence Pugh will also join the ensemble as Nat’s honorary sister, Yelena.
The film arrives in cinemas in May 2020 as the premiere entry of Phase Four.
Sharon Carter, Ms Marvel, Kate Bishop, and She-Hulk
Sharon Carter will return to the MCU for another dose of girl power in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier played by Revenge star, Emily VanCamp.
D23 revealed two new female-oriented series were in the works in the form of She-Hulk and Ms Marvel. Currently, there’s no information on these projects as they were only just announced.
As for Kate Bishop, she will make her first appearance in the upcoming Hawkeye series. If you’re not a comic book fan, you’re probably thinking, ‘Isn’t Clint Hawkeye?” You’d be right. We’ll witness him train Kate to be his successor. Hawkeye debuts on Disney+ in Autumn 2021. We’re getting serious girl power vibes here!
