Royal fashion. It doesn’t take a genius to work out what happened when a member of Queen Elizabeth’s family wears an item of clothing. Much of the time, it sells out faster than it does to make a pancake. We’ve seen it a lot regarding Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, and the late Diana, Princess of Wales.
So, which fashion brands do royal women love to wear? That’s what we’ll explore here.
Her Majesty The Queen
- Norman Hartnell: Before and after she ascended the throne, Vogue UK’s Naomi Pike wrote that one of The Queen’s go-to designers was Norman Hartnell. The fashion label designed her wedding dress, coronation gown, and the turquoise dress she wore to her younger sister, Princess Margaret’s wedding to Anthony Armstrong-Jones. She also wore a gown by the brand during a visit from then-US President JFK and his wife, Jackie. Also, the dress that Princess Beatrice wore on her wedding day was one of the Queen’s Normal Hartnell gowns that altered for her. The brand earned a royal warrant and was also a favourite of Princess Margaret and the Queen Mother.
- Angela Kelly: While not a fashion designer per se, Angela Kelly is Her Majesty’s senior dresser and has been in the same role for twenty years. She’s responsible for The Queen’s colour popping ensembles of recent years.
- Gucci: The Queen is known for wearing the Gucci brand. This was mentioned in the first episode of the Wondery podcast mini-series on the murder in the House of Gucci.
- Burberry: Many of Her Majesty’s headscarves are from Burberry.
HRH Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge
- Alexander McQueen: One of Catherine’s favourite fashion brands is Alexander McQueen. Her Grace Kellyesque wedding dress was by Sarah Burton, who worked for the brand around the time of the 2011 wedding. The Duchess also wore the label for her daughter, Princess Charlotte’s christening in 2015.
- Jenny Packham: Another of Catherine’s favourite fashion labels is Jenny Packham. She has worn an assortment of outfits from the brand over the years.
- H&M: According to the fashion blog Kate Middleton Style, Catherine enjoys wearing H&M.
- Zara: Another affordable brand Catherine is known for wearing is Zara, according to Kate Middleton Style.
Diana, Princess of Wales
- Catherine Walker: One of the late Princess’ favourite fashion brands was Catherine Walker. Diana became close friends of the designer sometime after she married Prince Charles. Not long before she died, the Princess of Wales had bought an outfit from the label, which she was then buried in. The label is also a favourite of Diana’s daughter-in-law, Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, and Lady Helen Taylor, the daughter of the Duke of Kent.
- Versace: Diana was a close friend of Gianni Versace and was a fan of the Versace brand. What’s more, is at the time, royals were only supposed to favour British fashion labels, according to L’Officiel USA. The Princess of Wales broke the fashion mould.
- Dior: Easily one of the most famous brands in the world, L’Officiel UK mentions that Diana adored Dior so much, that the fashion label renamed one of their most iconic handbags, Lady Dior in honor of her. Her daughter-in-law, Meghan Markle, would buy a Lady Dior bag over twenty-five years later and have DSSOS embossed on it.
