What Are the Borg In Star Trek?

Borg, star trek

Star Trek is well known for its humanoid species, and they don’t become human-like quite like The Borg. Making their first appearance in Star Trek: The Next Generation, the Borg are often the antagonists. Seen as pseudo-humanoids, the beings have appeared in other Star Trek series, including Enterprise, Deep Space 9, Voyager, Picard and Lower Decks. They’ve also appeared in the film First Contact.

What’s unique about the Borg is that it’s not linked to pure humans but to humanoid species. However, the Borg has assimilated non-humanoid species. They do not procreate and will assimilate babies if necessary, as seen in the Lower Decks episode, I, Excretus.

This post is just a brief rundown of the Borg. If you want further information, please use the link above to take you to the associated page on the Memory Alpha site (the official Star Trek wiki).

Multiple characters have either been Borg, or they’ve become Borg temporarily. Some of these include:

  • Seven of Nine (Annika Hansen)
  • The Borg Queen (beame
  • Hugh
  • Locutus of Borg (Jean-Luc Picard)
  • Excretus (Bradward Boimler)
  • Agnes Jurati (became the Borg Queen)

The Borg Origin Theory

There has even been a theory regarding how the Borg became a thing. Alan Van Sprang, who portrayed Leland in Star Trek: Discovery, mentioned in an interview with StarTrek.com that the fans had theorised that Control might’ve been a precursor to the Borg. He even said he had the same thought when reading the script.

Then, Michelle Paradise, a writer and producer of the series, said that while it was an interesting notion, it wasn’t what they had in mind when they came up with Control.

Finally, Michel Chabon, the showrunner of Star Trek: Picard during the first season, had the same theory, though he said it would be as much fun.
