WandaVision has been a pleasant thrill ride through the decades of sitcoms while putting the pieces of what is to come in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in new places…
With WandaVision becoming more wacky as the weeks go on, there is a load of surprises we aren’t exactly expecting with the show. We’re going to do a break down of the five things we were surprised by. Originally, the idea was to do a point per episode but it ‘s going to make it hard to pick.
Please caution that this post contains spoilers for what has been aired of WandaVision this far.
1. The Constant Captain Marvel References
We’ve known since San Diego Comic Con in 2019 that Monica Rambeau would be returning to the MCU as an adult. One of the biggest surprises we’ve gotten are the constant references to her godmother, Carol Danvers.
Though, all the nods to her so far have been to take a dig at her. Though, the question is why. We thought that it was just a one off in Spider-Man Far From Home from Talos (while posing as Nick Fury) when he told Peter Parker to evoke her name. It hasn’t been discussed as to what happened which makes us think it might have something to do with Carol choosing to defend other planets and not Earth.
Over with Monica, her beef with Carol might stem back to her mother who died of cancer two years after the blip. Did Captain Marvel even see her longtime friend in her final years? Was there some other incident that caused Talos and Monica to freeze at the reference of their ally?
2. Wanda’s Accent Suddenly Returns
One of the biggest surprises we got was the re-mergence of Wanda’s accent. Of the films she appeared in beginning with Avengers: Age of Ultron, the dialect had started to disappear until it did so altogether. It only took a couple of movies for it to happen.
However, it returned in episode 5 of WandaVision when Wanda exits the Hex to return the drone to S.W.O.R.D. She threatens Hayward and everyone present by telling them to leave her alone. It’s clear she’s angry so we can assume that the accent returns whenever she is upset.
The accent debacle also came up in Episode 6 when Wanda and her long-lost brother “Pietro” question each other about this.
3. The Surprises In The Career Of Darcy Lewis
One of the largest surprises we got was the appearance of Darcy Lewis from the first two Thor movies. In those films, she was a political science student working as an Intern to Jane Foster. In the intervening years, she changes her career path and becomes an Astrophysicist like her mentor and best friend.
We knew Darcy was smart but we never thought she’d change careers.
4. Hayward’s Behaviour Changes Really Quickly Which Surprises Us
When we meet S.W.O.R.D.’s acting director Tyler Hayward, he was a nice guy who replaced Maria after her death. However, as time as gone on, he has pushed his own agenda. It’s clear he sees Wanda as a terrorist and a threat they need to neutralise. He breathes down the necks of those who don’t agree with him and cuts Monica, Jimmy, and Darcy out when they argue with him.
He seems to change personality traits really quickly. It seems like he has his own agenda and he needs to get rid of Wanda. Question is why he is against super-powered individuals.
5. Pietro’s Persona Is Not As We Remember
We knew there would be some reference to Wanda’s dead twin brother Pietro at some point. Though, we didn’t except him to show up with a totally different face and attitude. Okay, we kinda guessed he would be a whole new person.
With his personality, we didn’t expect him to be so forward and willing to get Wanda to open up to him the way she has. Now, when he showed up assumed he had been pulled from the multiverse as Evan Peters played Peter Maximoff in the Fox X-Men films while Aaron Taylor-Johnson played Pietro Maximoff in the post-credit scene of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Age of Ultron where he died.
We thought that Peters’ new version of the character was a blend of both Peter from the X-Men franchise and Taylor-Johnson’s Pietro. Now, we’re not sure and it all comes down to his attitude. There are also things that neither character would’ve known like Vision being dead. Pietro was killed by Ultron three years before Vision was by Thanos.
Also, there is no way Peter Maximoff would’ve known this since he’s not a character in the MCU.
