Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway has been involved in at least two scandals since she married Crown Prince Haakon; the first was a surrogacy scandal, and the other was Epstein. The one we’re to cover is the surrogacy scandal.
So, in 2012, Mette-Marit was caught helping a gay couple in Norway with ties to the royal family go through with surrogacy in India. In Norway, surrogacy is illegal, so the practice had to be done in another country.
Mette-Marit was heavily criticised for her involvement by women’s rights groups who considered surrogacy a form of human trafficking and exploitation of underprivileged women. In 2013, the practice was also banned in India.
According to a 2012 article from Time Magazine, Mette-Marit travelled “incognito” to India. She cared for the twins on behalf of the gay courtier and his husband. She pretended to be the nanny.
Mette-Merit went to India posing as the help after the couple’s visas were delayed and they could not be at the birth, which was taking place in New Delhi. However, she was busted by a Norwegian journalist, who broke the story once the twins were in Europe.
Mette-Marit’s Actions Weren’t All Bad
However, the Crown Princess wasn’t only met with negativity. Some saw her act of going to New Dehli as heroic to help the infants be brought to their new parents.
Bent Hoie, the health spokesperson for the Opposition Conservative Party at the time, applauded Mette-Marit for doing what she did.
