This year has been huge for Marvel. All three of their films have reached $1Billion at the box office. Let’s look back in retrospective fashion at the heroes who made their Avengers debuts in Avengers: Endgame.
It’s the last day of 2019 and we thought we’d go out with a bang. To celebrate we’re going to talk about the characters who made their Avengers debuts in Endgame.
Cassie Lang
Introduced in Ant-Man, Cassandra “Cassie” Lang is the daughter of the second Ant-Man Scott Lang and his ex-wife, Maggie. As her father’s biggest supporter, the young girl was one reason why the former criminal joined the Time Heist.
Despite her survival during the Snap, Cassie was left believing her dad was dead. She reunited with him when he emerged from the Quantum Realm. However, she was five years older than she’d been before Scott disappeared. After Thanos’ defeat, Cassie reunited with her dad and unofficial stepmother, Hope where they watched the fireworks.
Queen Ramonda
The former Queen of Wakanda was hit with a double dose of loss when T’Challa and Shuri were among those that got dusted. While we don’t see the Queen Mother during Infinity War, we see the mother-of-two during the closing narration of Endgame. It’s here that she is seen embracing her children while overlooking Wakanda.
Scott Lang/Ant-Man
Like his daughter, Scott Lang had his Avengers debut after the Snap had happened. After being trapped in the Quantum Realm for five hours, he emerged to discover he’d been missing for five years.
His desperation to find Cassie was what made him search for her name among those missing. Upon their reunion, he finds she was five years older than she had been before he went missing. He was the one who drove the idea for the Time Heist and was one of those who fought Thanos.
Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel
In the post-credit scene of Infinity War before Fury and Hill were dusted, Nick used his old-fashioned pager to message an old friend. We see by the symbol that is projected that a big hero was coming. For almost a year, we had to wait see Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel on the big screen.
In the mid-credit scene of the Captain Marvel solo film, we see Carol arrive at Avengers HQ asking where Fury was. This scene was never referred to in Avengers: Endgame but if we had to guess, the scene took place before Danvers showed up to rescue Tony and Nebula.
Hope Van Dyne/Wasp
Hope was one of many people who got snapped out of existence by Thanos. Her snap included her parents while her partner, Scott was left trapped in the Quantum Realm. She returned with everyone who was blipped for the Battle for Earth. Hope even joined all the ladies in keeping the gauntlet out of Thanos’s hands.
By the end of the film, she attends Tony’s funeral with her parents and Scott. She even joins her boyfriend and stepdaughter Cassie to watch the fireworks after Thanos is defeated.
Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne
Like their daughter, Hank and Janet got blipped during the mid-credit scene of Ant-Man and the Wasp. We don’t see them during the final battle. However, we do see them with Hope and Scott during Tony’s funeral, marking their debuts in an Avengers film.
A young Hank appears in 1970 when Steve prank calls him to distract him so he can get the Pym particles.
May Parker
As Peter Parker’s aunt, May might not see Tony in the same light her nephew does, but she joined him at his mentor’s funeral. While she, much like Hank and Janet is a mere cameo, she’s there to console a grieving Peter who will continue throughout Spide-Man: Far From Home. Of all the characters to appear at Tony’s funeral, May was one of the debuts we didn’t expect. We thought Peter might’ve stood with Happy and Rhodey given how fond Tony was of him. Though, we love that May was there to support him. She could be in the firing line in the next Spidey flick. Hmm. We wonder what she should say about Stark’s friendship with Nebula.
Harley Keener
Of all the debuts, we didn’t expect to see this kid. While he might’ve looked different from the last time we saw him in Iron Man 3, Harley Keener made his Avengers debut at Tony’s funeral. Like May, Janet, and Hank, Harley joined Stark’s friends to pay his respects to the man who helped him stand up to his school bully.
Morgan Stark
As Tony and Pepper’s daughter, there was no way we were going to leave Morgan off our retrospective list of Avengers debuts. We have a such great love for her, despite her limited screen time. She gave her father the strength to fight back and want to bring back the half of the universe Thanos snapped away.
While she lost her dad, she will grow up knowing that he died to make her future brighter and safer.
Edwin Jarvis
In order to connect the Agent Carter television series with the films, there’s a quick cameo from Edwin Jarvis, the man who would go on to inspire Tony to name his first (and favourite) A.I after him.
Howard Stark
Throughout his later years, Howard had a strained relationship with his son, Tony. According to the younger Stark, his father never once told him he loved him.
When Tony, Scott, and Steve blow their chance to get the Tessaract during the Time Heist, the billionare comes up with the idea to go back to 1970, about a month prior to his birth to get the Pym particles they need to get back to their time.
Along the way, Tony bumps into his father but doesn’t tell him who he is giving him the fake name of Howard Potts. As they talk, the younger Stark hears what he wanted to hear from his dad when he was alive; that he loved him. He also mentions that he [Tony] had a little girl [Morgan], Howard’s granddaughter.
Howard’s last appearance comes when he asks Jarvis if he knew that guy [Tony] give how familar he seemed. Edwin says that they meet a lot of people.
Peggy Carter
We never thought we would see Peggy in an Avengers movie. When Steve and Tony arrive at the SHIELD base in 1970, Steve sees Peggy from a distance, yearning for the life they could have had together if he hadn’t gone into the ice.
When Steve goes back in time to return the infinity stones, he makes a return to the past where he lived out his days with Peggy before returning to the present to hand his shield and the Captain America title over to his friend, Sam.
Conclusion
Avengers: Endgame has so many characters that made their Avengers film debuts, but it’s these characters that have made an impact on the lives of the fans well before their Avengers debuts. Look at the impact almost all of these characters have and you’ll see how important they’ve been since the formation of the MCU and going forward into the future of the franchise. It’s just a shame we didn’t get Woo or a hint to Ironheart.
