If you’re a Planet of the Apes fan, then you would’ve seen the reboot films that started in 2011 with Rise of the Planet of the Apes with Andy Serkis as Caesar, but with a potential new film on the horizon, we’ve been assured that the movie will NOT be a reboot.
He’s the great ape who left behind a legacy in his youngest son. Yep, we’re talking about Andy Serkis’ iconic character, Caesar. In 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes, the legendary chimpanzee met his demise after being fatally wounded. He died with his two best friends, Maurice and Rocket, at his side and had them promise to watch over his surviving son, Cornelius, who was still reeling from the murders of his mother, Cornelia and older brother, Blue Eyes.
Since Disney bought 20th Century Fox, it’s been unclear what the franchise’s fate would be. However, in recent weeks, it’s been reported that Wes Ball, the director of the Maze Runner films, would helm a reboot of sorts. Fans have since been reassured that his film will continue the story of Caesar after his death.
If this film gets off the ground, what could it be about?
Cornelius Becomes The Focus
The new film is believed to continue what Caesar left behind. His legacy still lives in his orphaned son, Cornelius. So, while we don’t have any more information, we can guess where this story might take us.
Since Cornelius is Caesar and Cornelia’s only surviving child, we’d have to think that the story will focus on him. From what has been said, the film will take place after War. However, it is unknown when. It could be years, days, or weeks afterwards. We hope that it’s the first option.
Our reasoning is how raw Caesar’s death would still be to all involved. It would be difficult for Cornelius since the only relative he has left is his sister-in-law, Lake, who is his guardian. Also, we’d be seeing Maurice and Rocket dealing with the shock. Being Caesar’s closest friends, they’d want to look out for their honorary nephew. Could the truth about patient zero be included in Cornelius’ journey?
A Different Route – Focusing On Rocket And/Or Maurice
Before he met Cornelia, Caesar was busy fending off Rocket and getting advice from Maurice. However, if this new film does happen, it might not focus on Cornelius. Instead, it may give his BFFs time to shine. Also, after everything those three has been through, it’d be a chance to focus on an ape(s) close to Caesar.
If this does end up being the course of action taken, how could the story play out? Well, if we were to guess, the story would revolve around their own grief and how they handle losing their friend and leader. Maurice would be a safer bet for a solo film if we were to choose. We want this because it could show him setting up a sort of shrine to Caesar.
If they choose Rocket, it would be more emotional, given that he, too, lost family in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes when Koba murdered Ash, Rocket’s son. Now that he’s also lost one of his best friends, the story might show the chimp trying to grasp all the tragedy he has endured in his life.
Lake
War for the Planet of the Apes introduced us to Lake, the daughter-in-law of Caesar and Cornelia and the wife of Blue Eyes. While she only had a small role, she is now the guardian of her young brother-in-law, Cornelius. While this might be a bit of a stretch, the new film might focus on her raising Cornelius and honouring the loss.
Lake was an interesting character as she served as a new member of Caesar’s family. She became vital to keeping the apes calm after many of them were captured by McCullough.
