Another legend has died. Angela Lansbury, best known for her roles in Beauty and the Beast as the voice of Mrs Potts and Murder, She Wrote as Jessica Fletcher, has died aged 96, less than a week from her 97th birthday, Variety has reported. Her children have said she died in her sleep in her Los Angeles home.
Angela was born in England on October 16 1925. She was a distant cousin of former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. Dame Angela also had citizenship in Ireland, her native UK and the United States, beginning in 1951.
She was married twice; Angela was first married to Richard Cromwell in 1945 and divorced him a year later in 1946. Her second husband was Peter Shaw, who she married in 1949 until he died in 2003. Angela said that her role as Aunt Adelaide in 2005’s Nanny McPhee was a godsend. Especially after her husband died.
Angela was a prominent stage and television actor outside her film work. She starred as Aunt March in a TV adaptation of Little Women in 2017, in which she received glowing reviews.
In 2014, Angela was given a Damehood by the now-late Queen Elizabeth II. Angela received three Academy Award nominations. She also won seven Tony Awards and held a record of being nominated twelve times at the Emmys.
Angela lived a life well lived. So much so that we cannot write about everything she achieved in her lifetime. She was one of the last remaining remnants of Old Hollywood after the passing of Betty White earlier this year/late last year for our US readers. Ms Lansbury will be sorely missed by her fans, her family and everyone who grew up with her projects.
